Mould, fungal growth & damp
“Every home, every environment has mould spores.” It becomes an problem when the concentration of mould spores in a house are greater than what's found outside. Mould needs 3 conditions to flourish: ideal temperature, a source of food & moisture.
The temperature in most homes are ideal for mould growth. Frequent air changes are recommended to reduce the symptoms for mould & helps create a non stable environment for mould to thrive. In extreme cases damp cases Forensic Cleaning NI have also had to deal with fungal growths which presents a different dynamic & separate health risks.
Excess Moisture encourages damp & mould, the extra moisture can come from a number of sources: leaking pipes, rising damp, poor ventilation, blocked gutters, a leaking roof & even damaged non preforming window frames. Inhaling or simply touching these mould spores may cause an allergic reaction which can sometimes be mistaken for the common cold, the reaction can include sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes & a skin rash. Mould has serious consequences for asthma & COPD sufferers as exposure can cause respiratory attacks.
Mould can be invisible but regularly appears as white fluffy outbreaks or dark green or black spots in appearance, a common species is known as Stachybotrys Chartarum some areas where this mould cultivates itself is around showers, toilets, kitchens, window frames, exterior walls, stores, faulty refrigeration, air conditioning, unused vehicles, toilets paper and wood.

Prior to instructing a builder or damp proofing company it is recommended to remove the risk of the mould pores & spores, not only does this reduce the risk but also if the mould returns gives a clearer indication of where the mould originated from & could make the cost of repair less.
From our experience some Damp & mould prevention can sometimes be easily remedied like simple things such as cleaning out window vents, adding some insulation to a cold spot in a roof space, putting an air vent on a door, replacing a cooker hood filter, installing a positive air pressure system, that said it can also be serious albeit there are companies who can put in a wired damp proof course which heats the wall up gently and reduces rising damp, some walls may also need re plastered, cavity walls can be injected with insulation also.
